Turmeric
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizome—a type of underground stem—belonging to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It looks a bit like ginger but has a bright orange-yellow interior and an earthy, slightly bitter taste with peppery and mustard-like notes.
When dried and ground into a fine golden powder, turmeric becomes a spice that’s essential to cuisines across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and it’s also used in traditional medicine worldwide.
